Ms. Capobianco's Book Reviews

Back to Book Review List

Ms. C. recommends...

Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins

By the same author as All Alone in the Universe (FIC PER) and includes some of the same characters as that book.

I thought it would be a story through the viewpoint of one character, but instead, it tells the story of many kids--some friends, some not--whose lives intersect.

Realistic characters and events--funny in some spots.

Not a typical format.

Deliver Us from Normal by Kate Klise

Although I enjoyed this book with its quirky humor (it made me laugh out loud), I wondered if this was another example of a kid who really is an adult.  I wonder if 11 year old boys - or girls- have this type of inner dialogue?

The Ravenmaster's Secret

by Elvira Woodruff

If you like historical fiction, you'll probably like this story set in England about a boy who lives in the Tower of London.  His father is the Ravenmaster there, in a place where rebels and traitors to the crown are kept.  The young boy befriends a Scottish rebel girl and must decide what is the right thing to do when she is to be executed.

Iqbal by Francesco D'Adamo

What is the "price" we are willing to pay to get shoes, dresses, shirts, etc. cheaply?  Iqbal tells the story of a boy who was given to a carpet maker as a sort of indentured servant, except the terms of his employment will never end.  The children who are there work long hours in unsafe conditions, don't get enough to eat, don't go to school and get severely punished for trying to run away.  Iqbal has the spirit of a lion and fights to free the other kids in the carpet factory.  This is a good look at what really happens in certain parts of the world.
